Many new moms will experience hair loss around three months postpartum. As a new mom, I have experienced this as well as many people I know. Although very traumatic and uncomfortable, it is very normal for this to happen.
Hair loss after pregnancy happens because during pregnancy, your hair will grow more due to hormonal changes and shed less. Once you have a baby, a large amount of hairs go into the resting phase of hair growth which can cause shedding and oftentimes, large amounts of hair at a time.
Postpartum hair loss usually starts about three months after birth. Hair loss after having a baby can seem much more dramatic if you grew more hair during pregnancy or if you generally have longer hair.
What can you do to help your hair start growing again?
- Avoid using brushes or combs that stress the hair
- Invest in a good quality shampoo and conditioner
- Skip the heat tools
- Eat well
- Take your hair vitamins
