Scalp Care: Your Secret Weapon to Hair Growth

Scalp Care: Your Secret Weapon to Hair Growth

Jun 7, 2025

We focus so much on our hair, but what about where it all begins? Rather than researching the quickest ways to achieve more length, which products add the most volume, and how to make it retain moisture, we should be looking deeper and addressing the root (pun intended) of the issue! Scalp care is the unsung hero of hair health, and we’re about to take a deep dive into all things scalp health - both habits and products.

Oh, and before we forget.. We’ll be announcing the newest addition to our LHC lineup towards the end of this article, so stay tuned!

As we know, the scalp houses the hair follicles, making it the foundation for healthy hair. One of the scalp’s main functions is to provide each strand of hair with nutrients. When issues arise with the scalp’s health, it can lead to breakage, dullness, thinning, and slower hair growth, or loss of hair completely, as the hair is prevented from receiving the nourishment it needs to thrive.

Some common symptoms of an unhealthy scalp include itchiness, dryness, flakiness, and excess oil buildup. All of these conditions can contribute to clogged follicles and stunted growth. While many of these symptoms can be environmental or genetic, habits play a large part in scalp health.

Product build up is one of the main culprits here. Washing hair less and relying on dry shampoo between wash days has been a trend over the past few years, but there’s a sweet spot between letting your hair retain its moisture and polluting the scalp with layers of sweat, product, and natural oils and physically blocking new growth.

A clean, balanced scalp environment promotes stronger, faster hair growth, and healthy follicles nourish individual strands better, preventing weak and brittle strands. This combination of better nutrient absorption, faster hair growth, less shedding, and more effective follicle nourishment results in a shinier and fuller head of hair.

Ready to get there? Let’s break it down.

Properly cleansing is essential for removing the buildup of excess oil and product. This means shampooing twice - once to remove all the toxins and another time to properly cleanse the scalp.

The products you use and the way you shampoo matters as well! Parabens and sulfates should be avoided, as they deposit on your scalp and strands and can lead to dryness. While shampooing, you should gently (but thoroughly) massage your scalp each time. using circular motions and applying light pressure with the pads of your fingers.

This method both exfoliates and stimulates the scalp, gently rubbing dead skin cells away while bringing blood to the scalp, which in turn promotes growth! Plus, it feels amazing, and you deserve the extra relaxation. Take the extra few minutes to really get in there. You and your hair won’t regret it, we promise.

If you’re looking for a tool to enhance your scalp stimulation journey, we recommend massaging products in with our gua sha! This ancient Chinese tool has been stimulating scalps and boosting hair growth for millennia.

Once your scalp is clean, it’s essential to its health that it’s properly hydrated. Dryness of the scalp can cause it to overcompensate with excess oil production, creating a vicious cycle of too dry to instantly too oily. Luckily, keeping your scalp hydrated isn’t rocket science!

Proper hydration of the skin throughout your entire body starts from within. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to keep your scalp, skin, and body hydrated! Hard water and contaminants in water supply can also contribute to dryness, so a showerhead filter may be a good move depending on the water quality of your area.

Your pillowcase may also be to blame for scalp dryness, as cotton and other fabrics wick moisture away. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase and/or with a satin bonnet will lock that hydration in, as well as prevent friction and strand breakage.

Adding moisture back into your routine is a delicate balance, so it’s important to select products that provide sufficient hydration without weighing down your scalp and strands.

In the shower, we recommend going in with a deeply hydrating hair mask after your double cleanse to start your scalp out with a freshly hydrated slate, and then adding a hydrating oil post shower throughout your drying routine.

As your scalp slowly loses moisture in the days following wash day, adding it back in with a lightweight, nourishing scalp serum maintains the delicate balance your scalp needs to survive!

We’ve specially formulated LHC’s scalp serum to deliver intense hydration and soothe any dryness and irritation, while being lightweight enough to use daily. This helps balance oil production and reduces flakes, leaving your hair free to grow as fast and strong as possible. We recommend applying a small amount of the serum to areas of your scalp where hair is more sparse, and gently massaging, either with the pads of your fingers or our gua sha!
