Why your hair isn't growing

Why your hair isn't growing

Aug 19, 2025

We’re all after the same thing: longer, thicker, healthier hair, but most of us are going about it entirely wrong. A majority of growth solutions target the strands of the hair with masks and special shampoos, but the real magic starts at the scalp. Your scalp care routine makes or breaks your hair’s potential for growth, but don’t worry! We’re here to break it down and guide you through developing a scalp care routine for optimal hair growth.

Here’s the nitty gritty… Your scalp is much dirtier than you realize. All the sweat from your hot girl walks, natural oils, dead skin cells, and beloved hair products compound layer upon layer of buildup, leaving your scalp gasping for air. Clogged hair follicles quite simply are unable to sprout new growth, and your existing strands need access to nutrients and oxygen to stay strong! With the average person losing 50-100 strands of hair a day, it’s pretty easy to see how even the smallest buildup day over day leads to a huge impact on your hair’s fullness as time goes on.

We hate to say it, but your favorite in between wash day lifesaver is one of the largest culprits of scalp buildup. Dry shampoo should only be used very sparingly, if at all. Aside from the product being layered with existing sebum, sweat, and other pollutants on your scalp, most formulas contain benzene, sulfates, parabens, and aerosol propellants, all of which drain the life from your hair, and have even been found as carcinogens in extreme cases.

Your scalp may have an abundance of buildup if you’re experiencing any of the following: itchiness, flakes, greasy roots, or flat, lifeless hair. If you’re simply noticing more hair loss than usual, or your growth seems to be taking longer than usual, you may also be overdue for a scalp care routine overhaul.

While it most definitely is a labor of love, washing your hair more frequently may be the answer to your hair growth woes. While it’s become a hair growth trend to wash your hair less and less frequently, clinical studies have shown that waiting longer between washes accomplishes the opposite of the desired effect, leaving to overproduction of sebum, fewer good hair days, and an overall decline in new hair growth.

All the studies seem to agree on one thing: scalp exfoliation is the key to boosting hair growth. This one simple step simultaneously removes buildup and clears the pores on your scalp, allowing oil production to return to its natural balance. Gentle exfoliation also boosts circulation to the scalp, which stimulates follicles and encourages new growth.

Removing this buildup and stimulating your scalp actually boosts the performance of every other product in your hair care routine, from shampoos to masks and serums! Speaking of products, here’s our recommended scalp care routine for optimal hair growth!

One cleanse simply isn’t cutting it, especially for hair extension wearers! For your first cleanse, we recommend going in with our new Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo, specifically formulated to purify and stimulate your scalp, gently removing debris with quartz. You’ll fall in love with the luxurious whipped texture, and we’ve loaded the formula with powerhouse ingredients like biotin, hyaluronic acid, and kombuchka to strengthen and hydrate your scalp as it’s cleaned!

For your second cleanse, we recommend a gentle paraben and sulfate free extension safe shampoo coupled with a gentle scalp massage using the pads of your fingers. Don’t be afraid to take your time here - you deserve the pampering! Take extra care to clean around the base of your extensions, as buildup is more common in these hard to reach areas.

When it comes time to condition, massage your strands mid shaft to tip with your favorite paraben and sulfate free conditioner, or our beloved conditioning masque for an extra revitalizing boost! It’s very important to avoid directly applying conditioner to your roots as an extension wearer, as these velvety products may cause your wefts to slip.

While drying your hair, take care to be very gentle, and detangle starting from the tips of your hair to avoid causing unnecessary tension. We absolutely adore using our hydrating oil as the final step of a blow dry routine to seal the cuticle of each strand and lock in moisture and shine!

Your scalp care routine is far from just a wash day issue, especially if you’re looking to boost your hair growth beyond its typical half inch a month. To accelerate your hair’s lengthening rate, we recommend supplementing your diet with hair growth vitamins, and incorporating scalp massage in your daily routine, with a scalp serum before wash days to maximize circulation and nutrient absorption!

Whether you’re ready to take the full plunge into revolutionizing your hair growth, or just looking to tweak your existing routine a bit for some additional oomph, it’s time to give your scalp the attention it deserves. Don’t forget to check out our scalp exfoliating shampoo if you haven’t yet. From one hair obsessed person to another, you heard it here first… Scalp care is the new skin care!
