Rooted vs Ombré Hair: What’s the Difference?

Rooted vs Ombré Hair: What’s the Difference?

Dec 8, 2020

Have you ever wondered what the difference between rooted and ombré hair extensions are? Rooted and Ombré extension colors are available in Hand Tied Weft, Machine Sewn Weft, Clip-Ins, Tape-Ins, Keratin Bond and I-Tip. Here is the lowdown between these two types of Laced Hair Extension colors.

Rooted Colors are Only Applied to Roots

When reading off a rooted color, it will usually be something like R 8/60. The first color is the color of the roots and the second is the color of the rest of the hair. With rooted hair extensions, the root color will only be applied to the roots which is about one or two inches at the top of the hair. In more technical terms, rooted extensions give the hair a root smudge, so your roots will grow out more naturally.

Ombré Starts to Fade Lower Than Rooted

Ombré is read off the same way as rooted. If you are looking into buying Ombré 3/8, the top of the ombre will be color #3, and then it will fade into #8. With ombré hair extensions, the top color won’t just be applied to the roots, it will be applied lower than that as well. The first color goes down about a third of your hair then starts to fade into the lighter color.
