One of the most frequently asked questions in the world of hair extensions is: What makes hand-tied extensions better than machine-sewn wefts? The truth is, there’s no universal answer—just as there’s no "one-size-fits-all" extension. (Well, unless we’re talking about Laced Hair’s most-popular InterLaced Wefts, which are the perfect blend of the thinness of hand-tied wefts and the durability of machine-sewn ones!)

While hand-tied wefts have skyrocketed in popularity on social media over the last five years, popularity alone doesn’t mean they’re superior. Both hand-tied and machine-sewn wefts have their own place and advantages in the world of hair extensions, and they’re here to stay.

An Unpopular Opinion: Why I Prefer Machine Wefts

I’ll admit it—I prefer machine wefts about 95% of the time. Here’s why: they’re more durable, customizable, and pack more hair per weft than hand-tied wefts ever could. This means you can maximize volume for yourself or your clients without having to stack 5-6 hand-tied wefts to achieve the same effect.

Machine wefts work best for clients with medium to dense natural hair. When stacking machine wefts, this pros tip is to limit yourself to two wefts per row. Be sure to leave one weft about 1 inch short of the front bead to avoid overloading weight on the more fragile areas of the hair. This also helps prevent any noticeable “lumps” near the front hairline, creating a smoother, more natural look.

When Hand-Tied Extensions Shine

But what about that other 5% of the time? Don’t worry—hand-tied extensions still have a special place in my heart. They’re ideal for clients with fine to medium hair density and absolutely perfect for those with highly dimensional hair.

Hand-tied wefts allow for precise placement, much like when you're coloring a client’s hair. The individual wefts enable you to create the perfect color blend by layering different shades within each row, giving you maximum customization without sacrificing volume. The end result? Beautifully blended, natural-looking extensions tailored exactly to your client's unique hair, and effortless volume. 

Choosing the Right Extension for Maximum Impact

Ultimately, the choice between hand-tied and machine-sewn wefts depends on your client’s hair type, desired volume, and the specific look you want to create. Both methods have their own strengths and can be used to achieve stunning results. By mastering the art of stacking and understanding when to use each type of weft, you can offer your clients the best of both worlds—whether that’s effortless volume with machine wefts or intricate, dimensional blending with hand-tied extensions.
