How to Make Extensions Last Longer

How to Make Extensions Last Longer

Sep 16, 2025

We get it… Hair extensions are an investment. And like any investment, you want to maximize your bang for your buck. Luckily, making sure your hair extensions last isn’t rocket science, and we’re here to help you every step of the way!

Here are our 5 top tips for increasing the lifespan of your hair extensions!

Hair extension hair is significantly more fragile than your natural hair, as it is no longer receiving nutrients from your scalp. Due to this, friction makes or breaks the appearance of your extensions, leading to breakage, dullness, and dryness (oh my!)

Our fix? Silk everything - scrunchies, pillowcases, and a bonnet while sleeping if you feel so inclined. If you need to wear your hair up, low tension hairstyles like loose ponytails, loose braids, or a gently applied claw clip are the way to go.

As we mentioned, your hair extensions no longer receive nutrients from the scalp, which leads them to need moisture applied daily in order to maintain their shine! A lightweight hair oil is an absolute must, as heavier oils weigh down strands and lead to breakage.

The LHC Hydrating Oil is our recommendation, formulated with antioxidants and nourishment to seal in moisture and shine, plus prevent future damage. Oh, and the scent is absolutely divine.

Brushing your hair seems simple enough, but you’d be shocked at the amount of hair extension mishaps caused by improper brushing (think matting, slippage, etc.) We recommend brushing a minimum of twice daily

To brush your hair extensions, start with an extension safe brush and detangle gently beginning with the tips and working your way up to the root. When experiencing tangles, take extra care to apply pressure at the root to diffuse tension.

P.S. Your daily brush routine is the perfect time to incorporate your hair oiling habit.

This goes without saying, but utilizing high quality shampoo and conditioner protects your extensions. Avoid parabens and sulfates at all costs. Your stylist likely has recommendations tailored to your hair and scalp conditions and lifestyle.

The way you wash your hair also becomes more important as an extension wearer, as oil and product tend to build up surrounding hair extensions. We recommend double cleansing your hair, and taking extra care to gently wash in between wefts/tapes with the pads of your fingers.

For best results, we recommend incorporating a scalp scrub and deep condition into your hair care routine once a week.

Your stylist has your hair’s best interests in mind. It’s vital to listen to their recommendations on hair care habits, recommendations, and especially their timeline for hair extension maintenance appointments.

Going too long in between appointments can be dangerous to the health of your hair, as tension and tangle potential increase as extensions grow further from your scalp.

This goes without saying, but ensuring your stylist is hair extension certified and taking steps to further their education as a stylist greatly improves the chances of you loving your hair and your hair extensions lasting their absolute longest.

A luxurious hair extension experience only starts with high quality hair and an incredible stylist. The rest is up to you! Through utilizing these tips, you’ll extend your hair extension wear and maximize the return on your investment. Wishing you nothing but great hair days!
